Get referrals for an architect (or find one you like)
Get referrals for a general contractor (or find one you like) or decide if you will be your own general contractor
Research materials, ideas, costs, ..etc
Determine who you will work with (some general contractors also provide architect, blueprint, permitting services - quotes vary so make sure you know what you are getting)
Review plans and focus on details in architecture/blueprint review
Make sure all outlets (electrical, light switches, cable, phones..etc are located and convenient places
Discuss alternative designs and ideas
Discuss other projects that could be accomplished during remodel (often cheaper to get other work done while contractors are already at your home)
Clean up and move personal items in remodel area
Arrange for loan if needed
Make sure contract is thorough and an end date is committed and that payment is setup as you go (leave sizable payment for the end of project to keep contractor on the hook)
Make sure you have contractors cell phone, radio for emergency communication
Start picking out colors, appliances, fixtures..etc.
Monitor progress daily (check for mistakes)
make sure contractors clean up regularly
purchase needed materials and fixtures on time to avoid delays
Do not make final payment until ALL work is done to YOUR satisfaction
